Sebastian Vollmer is by far my favorite NFL player to ever come from Germany by way of the U. of Houston. So when he has Tom Brady on one of his videos trying to speak German, you’re damned right this is appointment viewing. And all fanboy exaggerations aside, I love this side of Brady. Goofy. Relaxed. Self-deprecating. Genuine. Not trying to do and say exactly the right thing. All seriousness aside, I laughed out loud at repeated viewings of this. “Volkswagen.” “Sauerkraut.” When he thought the German announcer was saying “Lightsaber.” This is sincerely funny as hell.
And in fairness to Brady, I took German for three years in high school and didn’t understand a word of this either. That’s because it simply never comes up. And I basically wasted years of my life learning a language I would eventually unlearn because there’s not a ton of Deutsche being sprechen around Eastern Massachusetts.
So really the only German I could speak to Tom Brady is “Ich liebe dich.” Which I mean exactly the way it sounds.
